From a young age, Maria Mitchell was fascinated by the stars. In 1847, she discovered “Miss Mitchell’s Comet.” Maria was an astronomer and a librarian. She advocated for the rights of women and was one of the first female professors of astronomy and the first woman member of the American Academy of Arts and Science. Maria believed that everyone should have the opportunity and freedom to learn about and pursue the things they were passionate about.
